Ukemi — Rolling and Falling
Ukemi is the body’s safe response to being unbalanced — rolling and falling in a way that protects the joints and keeps you connected to the ground. The Japanese name ukemi (受け体) literally means “receiving body”: the body that receives the fall. In Bujinkan training, ukemi is not a separate gymnastic skill; it is practiced as part of real technique, so that when a technique moves you to the ground you land, roll, and can continue moving. In Ocala, beginners spend their first sessions on ukemi fundamentals — forward rolls, back rolls, and breakfalling — before layering in technique work.
