Gyaku — Joint Locks

Gyaku means “reverse” or “opposite” — joint locks that bend a limb against its natural direction to control an attacker. Omote gyaku (front reverse) and ura gyaku (back reverse) are core examples, twisting the wrist and arm so the opponent must follow or break. Gyaku work in Bujinkan is trained with full awareness of the attacker’s condition and the effect of the lock, not as a brute crank. Students practice locks flowing from the Kihon Happo forms, learning how distance and body position make the lock possible.
