Atemi — Striking and Pressure
Atemi is the use of strikes and pressure to create openings — the “body conditioning” blows that unbalance an attacker before a lock or throw. The word comes from atezuru (当てる), to strike or apply against. In Bujinkan practice, atemi is not about force or competition; it is about correct body position delivering a strike that disrupts structure, so the follow-up technique works with less effort. Students learn strikes to the eyes, throat, groin, and other targets used to break the attacker’s rhythm and align them for the finishing technique.
